You have a website. You're proud of it. So why isn't it bringing in enquiries? Here are the five most common reasons African business websites fail to convert visitors into clients — and what to do about each one.
This is the question we hear most often when we first speak to a potential client: "I have a website, but it's not getting me any business."
It's frustrating. You invested time and money. You're proud of how it looks. But the enquiries aren't coming.
Here are the five most common reasons why — and how to fix them.
1. Nobody can find your website
A beautiful website that nobody visits is like a billboard in the middle of the ocean. If your site isn't showing up when potential clients search for what you offer, it doesn't matter how good it looks.
This is an SEO problem. Your website needs to be optimised for the specific words your clients actually type into Google. Most DIY websites and cheap template sites completely neglect this.
Fix: Invest in proper SEO setup from the start. Every page needs a clear focus, the right keywords, fast loading times, and proper technical structure.
2. Visitors don't understand what you do
You have about 5 seconds to convince a first-time visitor that they're in the right place. If your homepage headline is vague, confusing, or generic, they'll leave.
Common mistakes: - Headlines that talk about the company instead of the client ("We are a leading provider of..." — no one cares) - Jargon that only makes sense inside your industry - No clear answer to "what do you do and who is it for?"
Fix: Lead with a clear, benefit-focused headline. "Accounting services for small businesses in Accra" beats "Excellence in Financial Solutions" every time.
3. There's no clear next step
Your visitor is interested. They've read about your services. And then... they leave. Why? Because you never told them what to do next.
This is about calls-to-action (CTAs). Every page needs to guide the visitor towards a specific action — whether that's booking a call, filling in a contact form, or clicking to learn more.
Fix: Every page should have at least one clear CTA button. Make it obvious, make it action-oriented ("Book a Free Call," not just "Contact Us"), and put it somewhere visitors will actually see it.
4. The site doesn't look trustworthy
This is a hard truth: if your website looks cheap, people assume your business is cheap. Appearance communicates quality, credibility, and professionalism — whether you intend it to or not.
Signs your site might be losing trust: - Pixelated or stock photos that look generic - Inconsistent fonts and colours - No testimonials, case studies, or client logos - Outdated copyright year in the footer - No clear "About" section with real human beings
Fix: Invest in a properly designed site that reflects the quality of what you actually deliver. Add social proof — testimonials, case studies, client names. Make yourself human and credible.
5. It's not built for mobile
Over 70% of web traffic in Africa comes from mobile devices. If your website is clunky, slow, or hard to navigate on a phone, you're losing the majority of your potential clients before they even read a word.
Fix: Every website we build is mobile-first — designed for phones first, then adapted for desktop. It's not optional anymore.
The real problem
The websites that don't convert usually share one root cause: they were built to look good, not to work hard.
A website that works hard for your business is one that: - Gets found (SEO) - Communicates clearly (copy and structure) - Builds trust (design and social proof) - Guides action (CTAs and UX) - Works everywhere (mobile responsiveness)
If your website isn't doing all five, it's not working as hard as it should.
We built Webblio Africa specifically to solve this. Every site we build is designed around these principles from day one — because a website is only valuable if it actually grows your business.
